Game recap: Patriots at Chargers

(Bostonglobe.com)

The New England Patriots were able to sneak out a 27-24 cross country road win over the LA Chargers. It wasn't the prettiest performance for rookie Mac Jones, as he went 18/35 for 217 yards. The biggest drive of the game came late in the fourth, with Mac leading the offense down on a time killing drive to put the Pats up 10. Damien Harris continued his strong ground game, grabbing 80 yards and a touchdown off 23 carries.

The defense struggled early, but ultimately kept the high powered Chargers offense at bay, holding Justin Herbert to 223 yards, 2 INTs and 2 TDs. Former Charger Adrian Phillips had himself a nice revenge game, grabbing both interceptions. Christian Barmore and Matthew Judon stepped up with a big sack late and kept the pressure on Herbert all afternoon.

With the win, the Pats move up to .500 on the season and remain undefeated on the road. This is the first "real" win (not beating the Jets or Texans) that the Pats were able to pull out, which has to give Patriot fans a good feeling moving forward. To travel to the west coast and to beat a very solid team like the Chargers, is a real statement to how this team is shaping up and getting better as the season goes on.

The Pats will be traveling to North Carolina for a reunion with Stephon Gilmore, as they will be taking on the 4-4 Carolina Panthers.

Nothing quite beats a great team win on a Sunday afternoon!

Happy Halloween folks! Candy responsibly.

Pats get first home win in blowout over The Jets

Well that was a fun time wasn't it? The Patriots bounce back against a tough OT loss to the Cowboys by dropping 54 on the Jets for their first home win of the season. The Mac Jones led offense came out hot from the start, quickly going up 14 on back to back drives. Jones also had a career day, as he topped 300 yards for the first time in his young career, going 24/36 for 307 and 2 TDs. Unfortunately, one of the headlines today was the knee injury to rookie Zach Wilson, who went down awkwardly on a scramble, and eventually got taken out on the following play.

Damien Harris had another strong outing, getting 106 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 14 carries. Brandon Bolden and Kendrick Bourne were the two top dogs for the offense, with Bolden getting 79 yards and one TD on 6 catches. Bourne had 68 yards on four catches and threw a touchdown to Nelson Agholor early in the first.

Although it was a win against the ailing Jets, it was a statement game nonetheless. Both sides of the ball were clicking today, and the only downside of today were some injuries suffered by New England, Devin McCourty, Jonnu Smith, Shaq Mason and Harvey Langi all exited the game with injuries, but it is unclear the severity of them, as the game was out of hand rather quickly.

The now 3-4 Patriots will be traveling to the west coast to take on the Charger for a 4:05 Halloween day matchup. We'll see if the boys can keep this kind of momentum going as the season progresses, but overall it was a great fall day for some very relaxing football.

Cowboys Pull Out OT Win in New England

(Fred Kfoury)

The Dallas Cowboys came into New England this Sunday and walked out with a late 35-29 victory over our Patriots.

Dallas on paper dominated this game, with over 500 total yards, but somehow New England stuck in there long enough.

With the bend don't break attitude, the Patriots forced multiple turnovers, and made long Dallas drives end in 3 points instead of 7.

New England looked like they were going to run away with the win, after a 75 yard 1 play touchdown drive on a pass to a wide open Kendrick Bourne with 2 minutes of play left. But in the closing seconds the Patriots defense allowed too many yards to gun slinger Dak Prescott. Dallas gained 24 yards on a 3rd and 25 play to set up Zuerlein for a game tying field goal.

New England received ball to start OT and got cucked by a missed facemask call. A turnover on downs allowed Dallas to keep their elite offense rolling and score rather quickly.

Besides the disappointing result, the team continues to show hope. Much like last year, they contend in games they are not meant to, and play down to opponents they are supposed to clearly beat.

Week in and week out you do not know which team is going to show up. The team that lost at the buzzer to defending Super Bowl Champions, or the team that almost loses to 1 win Houston with a backup quarterback.

New England will look to get back in the win column with another hopefully easy matchup against the Jets next Sunday.

Patriots comeback for a win against the Texans

(CBSsports.com)

It certainly wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. The Patriots traveled down to Houston trying to turn their
1-3 season around and were able to edge out the Texans for a win, coming back from a 22-9 deficit. The game didn't start out well, as Davis Mills marched down on the Patriots defense with an 18 play drive that ended in an opening touchdown.

Both teams put on a display of errors, as New England still struggled with ball control and penalties, including a touchdown reversing fumble by Damien Harris in the first quarter. It looked as if Houston was taking control of the early game momentum, until they really decided to out play themselves with some questionable play calling. Momentum really started to switch when the Texans came out for a punt, got in a fake punt formation, then got BACK into a punt formation, only to punt it off one of their own guys' head.

Mac Jones looked impressive yet again, going 23/30 with 231 yards, with a one TD and INT. Hunter Henry is finally emerging as a legit offensive weapon for Mac, as he hauled in 6 catches for 75 yards and the game tying touch down.

The Patriots have a lot to work on, including their health. Damien Harris exited the game with a rib injury and most of the offensive line was missing today as well. The boys need to tighten up their fundamentals, as the red hot Dallas Cowboys are coming up to Gillette next Sunday for a 4:25 PM matchup.

Ugly wins are always better than cute losses, so we will certainly take it!

Patriots release CB Stephon Gilmore

(NFL.com)

Welll alrighty then! After months of negotiating and speculation, the New England Patriots have officially released All Pro and former DPOY Stephon Gilmore per Adam Schefter. This move certainly comes as a shock as Gilmore was placed on the PUP list to start the season, but was expected to return after week 6.

The offseason was full of spending for the Pats, but the star corner never got the extension that he desired. Health had to have played a role in this decision, as Gilmore suffered a bad quad injury at the end of the 2020 season, making it difficult to judge his availability for this season. There have also been talks of the Patriots bringing back Linebacker Jamie Collins for his third stint in NE, but never did I think that Gilmore would be a casualty of that move.

It is still possible that the two parties could make a deal, but at this point it seems highly unlikely. It is unknown how soon Gilmore will be able to play and where he ends up signing, but as of right now, one of the best cornerbacks in the league is a free agent. Wow.

Game Recap: Pats lose heartbreak in Brady's return

(sportingnews.com)

The long awaited matchup between Brady and the Patriots finally arrived, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers outlasted the Patriots 19-17. The game certainly didn't disappoint, as this game changed hands and leads back and forth all night. In a rainy night in Foxborough, Mac Jones stepped up to the plate in easily the biggest game of his young career. Going 31/40 for 274 yards, 2 TDs and one INT, the rookie went blow for blow with the GOAT and almost came out on top.

Weather certainly played a factor for the defending champs tonight, as Brady early on had some tough balls sail past his wideouts and forcing the Tampa offense to stay on the ground. Leonard Fournette totaled 20 carries for 91 yards and also caught 3 balls for 47. While the Patriots defense stepped up and kept the high powered Tampa offense to only 19 points, it was still just too much for this still developing Patriots team.

Although this will go down as a loss and drop the Patriots to 1-3, as fans we have to feel a lot better about where the team is at compared to just a couple weeks ago. Mac looked very poised and like a seasoned vet out there and put his team in a position to where they could almost take the lead with less than a minute to go. Unfortunately, Nick Folks consecutive Field Goals came to end, as he just missed left with a doink off the upright to take the lead.

There are still a lot of things this team can clean up, but the strides that they are making are certainly those in the right direction. You hate being on the losing end of an instant classic like these, but it's time to turn the page and look to Houston next Sunday.

How the Patriots could, do dare I say it? Win on Sunday!

Ok I get it, you're sick of hearing about Brady vs Bill and the return of the GOAT in Gillette. I'm sick of it too but I would be doing this blog a disservice if I at least didn't do ONE post about it. Let me just get this part out of the way: I know that there's like a 98% chance the Pats will lose this game, but the sick delusional fan part of my brain is really holding on to that 2% chance. The Bucs are overall a much more put together and experienced team, while the Patriots are still trying to figure out their identity.

So how in any way could the Patriots win this game? By getting after the quarterback and playing mistake free football. A lot easier blogged than done sure, but it's still very doable. Lets face it, the Pats looked awful last week against the Saints. No pass protection, costly penalties and getting slammed on time of possession. This will be one of the most simple and overused solutions in football, but the Patriots need to pound the damn rock and establish this run game we've been hearing about.

I'm not sure what the game plan was last week, but Mac came out throwing deep balls and running all over the pocket, and the offense never gained a first down until the second quarter. While Tampa has a very strong defensive front, Mac Jones won't have a chance at all to move the ball if he's dropping back and getting killed every play. Having only 11 designed runs last week is just setting yourself up for failure and will result in a worse outcome this Sunday night. If you can at the very least make the run game presence known, this can set up for more productive play-action plays and quicker routes to give the receivers just a little bit of separation from this banged up Tampa secondary.

As for the defensive side of the ball, you never want this to happen, but the Tampa is pretty banged up. Giovani Bernard, who had 10 targets come his way last week is out with a knee injury and unfortunately, Rob Gronkowski will not be making his homecoming as he still deals with a rib injury. So right away you already have two safety nets being taken away, and Tampa has not had much efficiency running the ball to any degree thus far. If Tampa comes out the way they have in the first three weeks of the season, the Patriot front seven needs to put a lot of pressure on Brady. For two decades we've watched Brady pick apart defenses with quick and short passes, but if a team ever got consistent pressure, the offense would struggle.

While they're still gelling and figuring themselves out, the front seven for New England has been pretty effective at forcing pressure and getting sacks. The absence of Stephon Gilmore has been felt immensely in the secondary, but if pressure can be applied quick enough, it should be enough for Tampa to run up the score.

So again, I still expect Tampa to come away with a win on Sunday night, but I don't think it will be a massive blowout. While Mac Jones has been impressive, the team will need to rely heavily on their defensive unit to get the job done. If the Patriots can win or at least get even with time of possession and make life very difficult for Tom Brady, I do have faith in our rookie QB to lead his team to get into position enough to win.
